After more than two hundred years of continuous construction work Nidaros Cathedral was completed early in the 14th century. However, during the following centuries the Cathedral was ravaged by fire time and again, and from the 16th century the Cathedral was left in ruins for almost four hundred years. The national awareness that had been growing throughout the 19th century brought with it the desire to rebuild the Cathedral in Trondheim to its former medieval glory. Hence a separate works facility – the Restoration Worksshop of Nidaros Cathedral, Norwegian abbreviation NDR – was established in 1869, and restoration and reconstruction continued for more than 130 years.
Today the NDR is in charge of preserving and safekeeping the Cathedral, and also for the guided tours service. Moreover, the NDR is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Archbishop's Palace, the prominent national monument adjacent to the Cathedral. The Archbishop's Palace includes the oldest secular building in the Nordic countries and two museums. |
