The NDR today
After its inception in 1869, the Restoration Workshop of Nidaros Cathedral – NDR – has worked in premises close to the Cathedral. Initially the workshop was housed inside the church itself and from 1914 in buildings north of the square facing the West Front. In 1982 the Norwegian Parliament decided that the NDR would be retained as a centre of expertise for the preservation of old stone buildings. In 1997 the workshops and administration of NDR moved to new premises in the protected military buildings at Bispegaten 11.

The NDR is formally directly under the authority of the Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs (Norwegian abbreviation KKD).
The NDR has two main functions: the building workshop with its long tradition is currently the larger of the two main activities. The second activity concerns the instruction and guidance services for visitors to Nidaros Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace. Moreover, the NDR is responsible for operating both these facilities.

The Archbishop's Palace was ravaged by fire in 1983, and in the summer of 1997 the two new wings were inaugurated. Since then the Archbishop's Palace Museum has been an important new attraction for visitors.
The NDR's main objectives
The NDR has been given the following main objectives by KKD:
- Nidaros Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace must be preserved and developed as cultural heritage monuments and religious buildings. This means all the restoration tasks involved in maintenance and preservation.
- Nidaros Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace must be developed as living cultural monuments and religious buildings. This means the instruction and guidance services.
- The NDR shall be developed as a national expertise centre for the restoration of historic buildings of stone. This means research tasks including development and instruction.
- The NDR operations shall be efficiently run according to management by objectives.
