Centre of Expertise
In 1982 the Norwegian Parliament decided that the Restoration Workshop of Nidaros Cathedral – or the NDR – would be retained as a centre of expertise for the preservation of old stone buildings. This was seen as a way of maintaining and using the special skills of the NDR craftsmen and the company's experience of restoration projects. In addition to the traditional NDR activities, new fields of expertise are being added, such as building archaeology and the preservation of buildings. The development of this centre of expertise is focused on the exchange of information and craftsmen within Norway and also in Europe. The external assignments the NDR undertakes are part of this new approach. |
The development of expertise is essential for the NDR. The company has in-house training schemes for restoration engineers. Restoration assistants take the company's four-year training course for craftsmen before graduating as engineers. The crafts in question include quarrying/stone cutting, stonemasonry, bricklaying, blacksmith work, carpentry, plaster casting and glaziery. As with all the other professionals at the NDR, the exchange of knowledge, experience and impulses with other environments is essential.
