Nidaros Cathedral Restoration Workshop

In medieval Europe, cathedral construction was commonly organized through a bygghytte (lodgement/workshop). These workshops were located next to or near the cathedral and housed multiple crafts under one roof. Nidaros Cathedral Restoration Workshop (NDR) is the oldest bygghytte in the Nordic region. It was established in 1869 to rebuild Nidaros Cathedral, which had partly fallen into ruin after several fires in the Middle Ages.

UNESCO status

Nidaros Cathedral Restoration Workshop is one of 18 European cathedral workshops that, in 2020, were inscribed on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
