Exhibition: Norway’s most significant doors
The exhibition Norway’s most significant doors offers a glimpse into the history behind Nidaros Cathedral's west front doors and the work of creating new doors for the national shrine.
From 25 April, you can experience the exhibition Norway’s most significant doors at the west front square outside Nidaros Cathedral.
The west front doors that greet visitors today were created as a temporary solution for the 900th anniversary of Saint Olav's death in 1930. What was intended to last a few years has now stood for nearly a hundred. The west front will soon receive new red-painted oak doors decorated with wrought iron ornamentation.
In 2022, Nidaros Cathedral received a gift that made it possible to realise new doors. Following an artistic competition, Danish visual artist Fredrik Tydén was selected to design what may be Norway's most important entrance.
The exhibition offers insight into the collaboration between Tydén and the craftspeople at Nidaros Cathedral Restoration Workshop, and tells the story of the old doors, the choice of materials, and the symbolism behind the new ones. Here you can immerse yourself in craftsmanship, art, and history — right in front of Nidaros Cathedral's west front.
The exhibition was created by Nidaros Cathedral Restoration Workshop in collaboration with the agency Tank.
