Nidaros Cathedral in Mourning
It is with profound sadness that we have learned of the passing of King Harald V. Out of respect for the deceased King, changes will be made to the programme at Nidaros Cathedral. Scheduled concerts and guided tours will be cancelled or postponed.
Until the day of the funeral in Oslo, Nidaros Cathedral will be open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for those who wish to light a candle and sign the book of condolences. Arrangements will also be made for visitors to light candles and lay flowers at the West Front Square in front of the Cathedral.
The daily church services will reflect the passing of King Harald, with prayers and hymns, Bible readings and music specially chosen for this time of mourning. A service of mourning will also be held. The time will be announced later.

More than 30,000 people visited Nidaros Cathedral during the period of mourning following the death of King Harald, from 28 August to 9 September 2026.
Many of them also visited the Crown Regalia Exhibition in the Archbishop’s Palace beside the Cathedral. The exhibition tells the story of the Norwegian monarchy over the past thousand years

Although the King's Regalia were kept in the Royal Chapel in Oslo until the funeral, many people visited the Archbishop’s Palace to see the Queen’s Crown and other royal symbols, and to experience the exhibition presenting a thousand years of Norwegian royal history.
The Crown Regalia and the Archbishop’s Palace Museum offered free admission from 28 August to 8 September and remained closed on the day of the funeral, 9 September.
